The Atkinson Cycle was invented in 1882, but not implemented widely until hybrid automobiles were introduced in recent years.  The closing of the intake valve is delayed so that the compression stroke is shorter than the expansion (power) stroke.  In the Otto cycle, from which it is derived, the compression and expansion ratios are the same.
